What Does It Really Mean To Be A Self Publisher?
Recall back in the times when there were zero online printing services and in case you desired to release a book, you had to go through the procedure of writing a query letter, finding an agent, finding an editor, getting an artist, and managing all of the modifications and bureaucracy that go along with the conventional printing houses? Well, thanks to the web, these times are behind us. Print-on-demand and personal publishing companies have changed the way the book market does business, but just before you jump into self printing, it is essential to fully grasp the characteristics of this unique press business. Whilst printing is now simpler than ever, you will find some points that each and every possible self author has to learn.
Just before the growth of the web world, the traditional writers would be the kings of the publishing world however, there the Cafepress, Lulu, Createspace and many others that could help you to print your book on the web. The principal attribute of the increase of self publishing market like Lulu is because of the conventional publisher’s absence in the circulation. Some of the conventional publishers will say, that they don’t have enough spending budget to print your book, even if they had since only a easy response “manuscript rejection”. Comparing to the self printing that you are the editor of your very own book.
You will find different web editors including the 3 providers pointed out previously to manufacture your book along with print them and deliver them then distribute it, after that, they make profit from your publishing. Personal writers aren’t that sort of writers that will really paid the writings however the writer himself will cover the publishing. Nowadays, the successful self-publishers control the advantages from the assistance of on demand printing. Personal publishing retailers for example Cafepress, Lulu, Createspace and others will print on demand the additional publications that the clients will want and they are going to ship it as well as get the payouts from the customers who order the books.
And as a writer, you’ve nothing to get worried but waiting to get your income from the printing stores, and also you’re the 1 to choose how much per publication will out in the market. And as an additional feedback, Cafepress, Lulu, Createspace self printing services can settle for from submitted digital material like Microsoft Word documents, PDFs, text data files and even Rich Text Format documents. The structure, size and design of the printing will come from the wish of the book creator. However the difference of online self publishing outlets to a standard self printing inside your area, the first one, they won’t bill upon submission right until there’s a purchase coming in.
That’s when they will bill for the service fee for your base cost from the publishing on demand but you have thecontrol of the last cost which they will be charging to the consumer before shipping. Although the second kind of self publishing in your neighborhood, will charge you upon distribution to print them right away. Another point, the community self publishing won’t help you to market your personal guide, the writer is going to be the marketer. They’re the exact same in the matter of the control how much will each book will cost to the purchasers.
You can find extra charges that an online self printing service for a further providers they’ll offer for example your cover layout, they evaluate and proofread your manuscript, in addition to indexing, promoting and marketing and advertising your publication. They will also offer you to handle your book to register to have an ISBN.
As an end for this article, the principal attribute of self publishing would be to win the competition towards the conventional writers. They will be obtainable anyplace aslong as you might have the pc, a web connection and legitimate email address to save your manuscript. You don’t have to walk or take a drive to the publishingoffice just to provide your manuscript. No need to go out. Just sit down and take it easy in submitting your manuscript.
5 of the Most Popular Web Hosting Companies
Shared web hosting is still the most popular type of hosting online, although that will probably change in a few years when cloud hosting will be perfected and everyone will start using it in their datacenters. It is very cheap and if the physical machines are powerful enough and not too loaded, it’s enough for most small-to-medium applications that will have anywhere from thousands to hundreds of thousands of visitors per month.
If you are just starting out and you need a simple, easy to use hosting for your new site, forum, newsletter, e-shop or other online presence, you can easily go with shared web hosting.
Shared web hosting works very simply: a single, powerful machine (most datacenters nowadays use 4-8 processor cores, 8-16 GB of RAM and 2-3 500-1000 GB hard drives for this purpose, which is enough in 90% of all cases) hosts the accounts of 10-30 clients, with their websites, email accounts and everything else they might have.
The resources are distributed dynamically on a per need basis, and the theory is that it’s highly unlikely that all of the websites on the server will be hit by a lot of traffic at once, so most of the time; they are enough to keep a stable, high performance for all the clients. When a site gets to the front of Digg or other social network and starts receiving tons of visits, it uses more resources than usual, but because the other clients’ sites are mostly idle, they don’t notice anything.
If that site uses more than a certain amount of resources (which is set in the customer agreement), it is disabled until the owner does something to lower the load or moves to a VPS or dedicated server. This is the biggest drawback of shared hosting, but can be avoided by using a CDN (Content Distribution Network) like the free Coral CDN or paid MaxCDN (the latter gives you nice analytics and more control, but the former is good enough for basic use), which basically caches your pages on a whole network of servers that then serve them to your visitors, avoiding your shared hosting completely (and therefore, not loading your site).
Now that you understand what shared hosting is and how it works, let’s take a look at the best cheap and reliable web hosting companies and see what they have to offer.
1and1. With over 4 million customers and 5 datacenters all around the world, 1and1 is truly one of the leaders in the hosting industry. They have the cheapest prices and the most features per dollar you pay. I also like how they don’t say they offer unlimited everything (which is just impossible) like a lot of other companies do, but that will probably change. They offer various shared hosting plans from $4 to $20, with a lot of disk space and unlimited bandwidth (although it’s probably limited to about 3000-4000 GB per month, like most other companies). They have a great custom Control Panel where you can control everything (obviously
from email to domains to transfer limits and billing. They also run frequent discounts of 50% or more percent for the first 3-6 months, which is great if you’re strapped on cash when you start out. Another great thing they do is give you $75-275 for AdWords, Yahoo and CitySearch, so you can use those vouchers to advertise your products. That can easily cover the hosting price for a couple of years!
HostGator. One of the most advertised hosting companies online, HostGator has offers for everyone. Starting at $4.95, they offer unlimited everything (which is not really true, but I guess they couldn’t compete with anyone if they advertised their real limits), and for the $12.95 plan, they give you a free dedicated SSL certificate, IP address and phone number, which would otherwise cost about $90, and is great if you need them (they can all be used for an e-commerce site, for example). They use the cPanel Control Panel, which is pretty standard and works well.
iWeb. Another great hosting company that makes it to the top lists and receives various awards every year, iWeb has a very good shared hosting offer, even if it’s more expensive: they offer a zero-downtime guarantee, which is achieved by having the shared hosting in a virtualized environment (i.e. a cloud) with a few redundant servers as backup. This is great news for anyone who knows how valuable every minute a site is available is. The rest of the offer includes 600GB which you can’t use for personal stuff (although you can probably host videos for your site), unlimited bandwidth and one domain for $1, which is nice. The cost is $1.67 per month, but only if you subscribe for 10 years. If you want to pay monthly, the cost is $7.77.
ix Web Hosting. This was and still is one of the best hosting companies for the last 10 years. Their current offers are between $6.95 and $12.95 (with a special discount of about 50% for all of them) and include free dedicated IPs (2, 3 and 15, which is just amazing, you could use them for SSL, cloaking, proxy sites and other things) and Adwords/Yahoo coupons ($100, $125 and $150). Not too bad, definitely worth checking out.
JustHost. This company has been getting a lot of attention in the last couple of years, and users say that it’s quite good. They’re pushing the limit with their all-unlimited offer (which I believe isn’t true, as I said before), but the price and uptime are good enough, and the support is great, so they can be forgiven
. They also give you a free domain with their $6.95 plan (now only $3.45, special promo offer), which is always a bonus.
Shared hosting is a great way to get your presence online and start a site, forum or anything else. If you want to find a webhost It’s cheap, easy to use, doesn’t require a lot of manual configuration (unlike dedicated servers and VPS), and it’s powerful enough to hold a small or medium site with a few tens of thousands of visitors per month. Unless you need more control over your server, you can easily go with shared hosting.

Build WordPress Static Sites
Almost everyone involved in the industry of designing and running web sites and blogs knows that one of the most popular and powerful blogging packages available is WordPress. WordPress is a free software package, some hosts will even handle installation of it for you at no charge, that makes running and updating almost every feature of a blog a somewhat easy to do task. WordPress is the most popular blogging platform for a reason, it is usable by both newcomers to blogging as well as experts who have been blogging for years. But as good as WordPress is for running a blog which is updated frequently with fresh content, can it also be used to run a static web site as well?
The answer is yes.
With a few simple adjustments involving disabling the comments, editing the theme, and setting the homepage to be a page instead of a post, a WordPress blog can be transformed into a WordPress static site. The site will not be a true static site, as the information will still be assembled from a database of pages, but it will have the appearance of a static site.
One of the nice things about using WordPress for a static site is that it is very easy to edit, delete, or create new pages too. You would just add content in the form of pages, instead of posts like for a blog, and the WordPress software does the rest in assembling it into your website structure. There is no creation of new html pages, no unnecessary using of an html editor or other web design software. The WordPress platform is all that you will need when it comes to any updating or maintenance of a static web site.
Using WordPress for static web sites is not only possible, but highly recommended. It makes the setup of the site easy and the editing and up keep of the site painless. Also, if you are already into blogging, it means you don’t have to learn another design language or content management system, you can keep on working with a program you know. Plus, with all the new updates in terms of the WordPress software itself, as well as the continued development of quality plugins, using WordPress for a static site is getting more and more attractive. Many designers and web marketing people actually prefer using this popular blogging software for their static sites as well.
What to do with a Damaged PST File
Having a damaged pst file is about the same as having your whole computer go down. At least for me. always incluide the pst file in the backup software you use and back on a regular bases.
Your PST file stores all your Outlook data including contacts, attachments, e-mails. If you don’t know how to make a backup of this then we urge you to look over at this Outlook PST backup page. It has a link to the free Microsoft backup plug-in that will help ensure you never suffer if your pst file goes down.
For those that already have gotten an error you can view the above linked website for exact tips on trying to recover it. Keep in mind that in the end if the free methods do not work then you will need to purchase some pst recovery software to get the job done. For the busienss person who needs those e-mails the cost of the software is small compared to what you are getting in return.
As you should already be able to tell the best thing to do is always have a back of any file you use a lot. Not only on a regular basis but even after your file has gone bad. The reason for this is you need to ensure you do not do more damage to the file. Making a backup is a must. That way you can use multiple methods to try and get your data back without having to worry about doing more damage.
Outlook has a nice free tool called scanpst. exe that you should consider using first. It is a very week tool but if your issue is just in the headers of the file it will resolve your issue. If the pst file get demaged more it is going to be that much harder to do a proper repair of it. It should only take about 20-30 minutes for you to run this free tool so it’s worth a try.
the Microsoft Outlook repair tool is the only free one on the market at this time. you would think Microsoft would of made a better tool to help in the repair process and perhaps they re-working on one but it’s not here yet.
If you are having an issue with your old pst file being too big and over the 2g mark then there are a number of free and paid tools out there that can help you resolve this issue.
The Digital Book Reader Revolution?
So what is so great about digital book readers? Digital book readersare now moving from simply being a new toy that gadget freaks want and into the wider world. So what will make you look for a digital book reader? What gains does an ebook reader get you?
The printed book has been our choosen medium for reading for centuries, enormous libraries exist with books bringing a worth and feel (literally) uniquely it’s own So for digital book readers to overcome this place in our society they are going to have to give some great benefits.
Proposed Benefits of Digital Book Readers
What benefits can digital book readers bring to users that they don’t get with a physical book?
- The first is ease of transport. While a digital book reader takes up roughly the same size as a physical it can in fact hold tens of hundreds of books inside. This means that when you are on the move there isn’t any need to take half a suitcase worth of books, just a book sized digital reader
- Instantaneous downloads. Books are hard copy, they need to be picked up from shops or posted which means waiting or go collect it. Ebooks (Electronic Books)of digital book readers are instantly available for download, meaning you can start to enjoy your book straight away.
- Storage space. Being an avid book reader it can be difficult to find space for all the books that you own. Many such people end up having to give their books away. Wouldn’t it be preferable to instead be able to store some of your books on a small little device like a memory card? That is what an eBook can offer you.No more need for vast storage areas,or giving away books you may want to keep, just an easy to access and store system that takes up next to no space.
- Price. Whilst a digital book reader can seem pricey the greatly lower price of ebooks v traditional books mean that if you are getting books on a frequent, or even semi frequent, basis then you will find it so much cheaper.
- Wear and tear. Books suffer from degradation.Folding pages, yellowing, water damage, rips etc are something that anyone who owns a book is aware of. With an eBook though they will never suffer these issues as they are stored in digital form While it is possible for the digital book reader to suffer damage(though they are strong gadgets) your ebook library will be unharmed, and can be transferred to a new book reader if needed.
- Varied Use. It is possible to~You can also} read other documents on these readers, such as work reports or newspapers. It can greatly increase the functionality of the digital book reader over that of a physical book.
These are some of the reasons that most people enjoy owning a digital book reader. Other reasons exist and their importance will be different to you and a friend. It should be noted that at this point digital reader manufacturers and eBook publishers are not suggesting eBooks as something to take over completely from traditional books, just an additional interest that will benefit those that like to read.

What’s My IP Address?
Ever wonder what your IP address is? In most cases you can probably care less. But occasionally you may have a need to know how other computers see your system on the Internet, especially if you’re sitting behind a firewall. Most Corporate computer systems today are protected from direct access from the Internet by means of a firewall. A firewall is a piece of hardware, software or a combination of both that protects your computer systems from direct exposure to the outside world by hiding the actual IP addresses of the servers, workstations and other devices that are connected behind it. To the outside world, one or more IP addresses are exposed to the Internet, but none of the internal IP addresses are exposed. The firewall does the translation of the incoming and outgoing messages so that only the IP address(s) you want exposed will be.
There are several reasons for using a Firewall. The most obvious is for security reasons. It can help to protect the internal servers and workstations from direct attack by malicious users outside of your network. Another important reason for using a Firewall is for privacy purposes. This of course goes hand in hand with security. Most Firewalls contain internal rules that determine who can and cannot get into your network from the outside world.
There are times however, when you need to provide access to one or more of your internal systems to the outside world. An example would be where an external company provides an online service to your internal users by means of a web service or website. In order for your users to gain access to that external service or website, the IP address that your company exposes to the Internet may have to be added to the Firewall rules of the external service provider’s Firewall. On the other side of the equation, you may have to add the IP address of the external service provider into your Firewall. This will allow both networks to talk to each other.
In the event you ever need to know your external IP address, you can talk to your Network Administrator and/or Security Department. You may also visit one of the following websites. When you visit one of these sites using your web browser, the site will detect your IP address and display it to you. This address will be how others see you on the Internet.
This site also provide a useful feature that shows you where someone is physically located based upon their IP address. This can be very useful in identifying the source of a malicious attacker.
Finally Getting a New Computer System
Well, I finally did it. I’m getting a new computer system. I’ve had my current system for about five years which is a really long time as far as Personal Computers are concerned. A lot has changed in the last five years. The technology has changed so much that my system is a real dinosaur.
Looking back, I think I really made a big mistake by buying the system I have now. As a Software Developer, I wanted something powerful and able to do some heavy duty number crunching. Then of course there are always the bragging rights. In my business, whoever has the latest and greatest in computer hardware is looked upon with some degree of awe by their fellow Programmers.
Five years ago, I purchased a Compaq Evo W6000 Workstation. The system itself is great and I’ll probably keep it around for a while as a backup system. The system came with 512 MB of memory, which was a fairly good amount at the time. It has been sufficient for just about anything that I’ve needed to do since I’ve had it. However, over the years many software applications are needing more and more memory. So a while back, I decided to look into a memory upgrade for my system. I was expecting the cost to be minimal and would allow me to continue using this system for a while longer.
I was flabergasted to find that the memory for this system had dropped very little in price from when I purchased the system five years ago. Not only that, but it was extremely hard to find. The system uses a type of memory called ECC PC-800 Rambus RIMM. I recently checked a couple of places online where the memory is available and it is running about $150 for a 512 MB chip. I would like to get my system to at least 2 GB or 4GB if possible. But as you can see, it would cost me almost as much as a whole new system just to upgrade the memory. Forget that.
Now to my new system. It’s a real beauty. I decided to have it custom built at a local computer store in the town where I live. Their prices are comparable to NewEgg.com and I believe I got a pretty good deal. Here is the breakdown of the system. I went with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor. I had initially planned to go with the Core 2 Duo, but recent price decreases convinced me to move up to the Quad processor.
The system will have 4 GB of main memory which should allow me to do just about whatever I need to do. I had thought about going the 64-bit route and possibly 8 GB of memory, but since I wanted to stay with Windows XP Professional and avoid Vista for a while longer, it wouldn’t have bought me much. Windows XP Professional can only use the first 3 GB of memory, so going beyond 4 GB wouldn’t do much for me. Yeah, I could have gone with the 64-bit version of Windows XP, but I’ve heard that a lot of software doesn’t take advantage of that and that some software won’t even run on it.
I went with a Seagate 250 GB SATA II drive. This should do me for quite a while. It will also have a Light Scribe DVD/CD drive which I’m looking forward to playing with. The last major component is the video card. I looked at several before deciding on the nVidia GeForce 9600 with 512 GB memory. I’ve always wanted to get into 2D and 3D graphics and Animation and I think this should be a pretty good card to start with.
Finally, I decided to upgrade to a larger monitor. I had an 18″ LCD monitor a while back, but the thing actually blew up on me. I had been working on my system and had just walked into another room when I heard a loud pop. I didn’t have a clue what had happened until I saw that the monitor had gone out. I thought at first that my screensaver had activated, but then I saw where the top left corner of the monitor was gone. It had actually blown off. I’ve never heard of that happening and of course the monitor was out of warranty when it did it. Oh well, things like this only seem to happen to me.
The monitor I chose is the LG 22″ Flatron wide-screen monitor. It supports resolutions up to 1,680 x 1,050 which should be enough for just about anything I will ever do with it. Since the video card will support two monitors, I may use the LG 22″ and the Viewsonic 19″ CRT monitor thats on my old system.
Well, I’m looking forward to picking up my new system tomorrow. Since I like to keep systems for a long time, technologies will most likely be significantly more advanced by the time I decide to upgrade again. Who knows? By the time I get another system, I might be wearing it or something.
Barry
